Today marks the birthday of the current emperor, Emperor Akihito, thus being a national holiday in Japan.
Emperor Akihito was born on the 23rd of December in 1933 and is the 125th emperor of his line according to the traditional order of succession. He acceded to the throne in 1989. In Japan, he is never referred by his given name but is referred to as 天皇陛下 Tenno Heika, which means His Imperial Majesty.
Tenno Heika is the eldest son and the fifth child of the previous emperor, Emperor Hirohito. He married Empress Michiko (皇后美智子 Kogo Michiko) previously known as Shoda Michiko also known as on the 10th of April in 1959. She was the first commoner to marry into the imperial family. The Emperor and Empress have three children. His eldest child, Crown Prince Naruhito is the next heir to the throne.

On this day, the gates to the imperial palace is open to the public and people are allowed to gather to catch a glimpse of the emperor and the imperial family. Everyone is given a flag to wave when the royal members make their appearance.
Such an auspicious day is worthy to be looked upon even by us here in Brunei. Hopefully someday, I would like to be able to see the Emperor himself in reality.
As always, I do not own any of the pictures or information.
